2. HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION
2.1 Health Effects - Acute Swallowed
May cause abdominal pain and nausea. Eye
A mild eye irritant. May cause redness and pain. Skin
Repeated or prolonged skin contact may lead to irritation. Inhaled
Inhalation of mists may produce respiratory irritation. Symptoms include sore throat, shortness of breath, coughing. 2.2 Health Effects - Chronic
Chronic ingestion studies in animals have shown that repeated doses gave no effect in the range of 250-300ppm. Slight effects on the liver were seen at higher doses. Adverse effects (blood disorders) have been seen in newborn rats, reared by dams fed on high doses of this material. Chlorinated paraffins, as a group of chemicals are not genotoxic. Their lack of genotoxic activity together with the results of other studies leads to the conclusion that chlorinated paraffins are unlikely to present a carcinogenic hazard to humans under normal conditions of handling and use. Evidence from animal tests indicates that repeated or prolonged exposure to this chemical could result in liver and kidney disorders.
2.3 First Aid
Swallowed
Rinse mouth with water. Give 1 - 3 cups of water to drink. DO NOT induce vomiting. Seek medical attention.
Eye
Immediately irrigate eyes with copious amounts of water for at least 15 minutes, ensuring eyelids are held open. Remove clothing if contaminated and wash skin. Seek immediate medical assistance.
Skin
Wash contaminated skin with plenty of soap and water. Remove contaminated clothing and launder before reuse. If irritation occurs seek medical advice.
Inhaled
Remove victim from exposure - avoid becoming casualty. Remove contaminated clothing and loosen remaining clothing. Allow patient to assume most comfortable position and keep warm. Keep at rest until fully recovered. Seek medical advice if effects persist.
First Aid Facilities
Ensure an eye bath and safety shower are available and ready for use.
2.5 Advice to Doctor
Treat symptomatically based on individual reactions of patient.
2.6 Toxicity Data
Oral LD50 = >21.5 ml/kg (for a C12, 59% chlorine paraffin)
