2. HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION

2.1 Health Effects - Acute

Swallowed

Harmful if swallowed.

Eye

Although animal studies indicate that bioallethrin is non-irritant to the eyes; symptoms such as severe transient paraesthesiae may occur in humans.

Skin

Although animal studies indicate that bioallethrin is non-irritant to the skin; some transient cutaneous sensations may occur in humans, such as burning or stinging sensations on the face and mucosa, without lesions. These usually last for a maximum of 24 hours.

Inhaled

Harmful by inhalation.

2.2 Health Effects - Chronic

Bioallethrin is not mutagenic, teratogenic or carcinogenic.

2.3 First Aid

Swallowed

If swallowed DO NOT induce vomiting, wash out mouth with water. Give water to drink. Keep patient at rest. Seek immediate medical advice.

Eye

Immediately rinse eyes thoroughly including under eyelids, with running water for at least 15 minutes. Seek medical advice.

Skin

Remove contaminated clothing. Wash affected area with plenty of soap and water. Seek medical advice.

Inhaled

Remove person to fresh air. Keep patient at rest. Seek medical advice.

First Aid Facilities

Ensure an eye bath and safety shower is readily available.

2.5 Advice to Doctor

Treat symptoms after decontamination. Local contamination: skin and eye contamination may cause local paraesthesia, which may be painful, but is usually transient, resolving in 24 hours. Vitamin E or simple toilet milks may be applied to the skin. Instillation of local anaesthetic drops e.g 1% amethocaine hydrochloride eye drops may relieve pain in eyes. Systemic poisoning measures should be considered following ingestion of very large amounts or exposure to high concentrations; monitor respiratory and cardiac function; observe specific parameters - electrocardiograph, check for pulmonary oedema in event of inhalation; gastric lavage: charcoal administration.

2.6 Toxicity Data

Oral LD50 = 709 - 1042 mg/kg (rat) Dermal LD50 = > 3000 mg/kg (rabbit) Inhalation LC50 = 2.51 mg/l (rat) Eye irritation = non-irritating (rabbit) Skin irritation = non-irritating (rabbit)
