 2. HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION
2.1 Health Effects - Acute Swallowed
Oral LD50 (rats) : > 5 g/kg Typical effects of ingestion of soaps, ie. irritation, nausea, diarrhoea and occasionally vomiting. Oral toxicity is low. Eye
Temporarily mild irritation may occur. Skin
sodium Stearate may remove protective natural oils from skin, causing dryness or redness. Inhaled
Inhalation LC50 = Not available High concentrations may cause coughing or mild temporary irritation. No permanent damage. 2.2 Health Effects - Chronic
Long term exposure to high concentrations may cause increased mucous flow in nose and airways, this condition usually disappears after exposure ceases.
2.3 First Aid
Swallowed
Do not induce vomiting. Give water to drink and seek medical attention.
Eye
Irrigate with fresh water for 15 minutes. As a precaution seek medical attention
Skin
Remove contaminated clothing and wash gently with soap and water.
Inhaled
Remove to fresh air and make comfortable. Seek medical attention as a precaution
First Aid Facilities
An eye wash bath should be located in close proximity to usage point.
2.5 Advice to Doctor
Treat symptomatically.

 3. PRECAUTIONS FOR USE
3.1 Exposure Standards
The NOHSC have a TWA = 10 mg/m3 for stearates, which is equivalent to the recommended value for nuisance dust in the work place (measured as inspirable dust).
3.2 Engineering Controls
local exhaust to keep dust below exposure standard.
3.3 Personal Protection
Wear overalls, rubber gloves and eye protection. Wear particle filter conforming to AS1716 if dust exceeds exposure standard.
3.4 Flammability
does not present specific fire hazard but will burn if ignited. Keep away from sources of ignition. Ground all equipment to prevent static sparking. May form explosive dust cloud - see Explosion Hazard. SAFE HANDLING INFORMATION
4.1 Storage / Transport
Store in a cool dry place away from sources of ignition.
4.2 Packaging / Labelling UN No. N/A Class None Allocated Sub Risk None Allocated Hazchem Code N/A Pack Group 0 EPG No. N/A Shipping Name SODIUM STEARATE 65F Hazard

4.3 Spills and Disposal
Spills
vacuum spillage whilst wearing particle mask. Put into well sealed bags to minimise dust.

Disposal
Dispose of in dump-master. Comply with all government regulations on waste disposal.
4.4 FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARD Fire / Explosion
Sodium Stearate powder in air, plus an ignition source is a potential dust explosion hazard. Avoid generating dust to reduce explosion risk. May evolve carbon monoxide fumes if ignited. Wear self contained breathing apparatus.
Extinguishing Media
Extinguish using water fog, dry Chemical, carbon dioxide or foam. Water spray may be ineffective and is not recommended. 5 OTHER INFORMATION
Other Information
A saturated aqueous solution is strongly alkaline.
