2. HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION
2.1 Health Effects - Acute Swallowed
Very low toxicity. None currently known. Eye
Dust may irritate the eyes in the capacity of a foreign body, no damage caused. Skin
Not readily absorbed by skin. None currently known. Inhaled
Breathing dust may irritate the nose and throat. May cause coughing and chest discomfort. No permanent damage caused. 2.2 Health Effects - Chronic
No specific information available, however long term exposure to high concentrations may cause increased mucous flow in the nose and respiratory airways. This condition usually disappears after exposure ceases. Other symptoms of overexposure include tiredness, anemia, constipation, low appetite, excessive PBO infection will cause decreasing of birth rate, miscarriage. These symptoms may occur after weeks or months. Acute health hazards include paralyisation in four limbs, vomiting, kidney damage and diarrhoea.
2.3 First Aid
Swallowed
DO NOT induce vomiting. Give water to drink and seek medical attention.
Eye
Flush with copious amounts of water for 15 minutes, occasionally lifting upper and lower eyelids. Seek medical attention.
Skin
Remove contaminated clothing. Flush skin with soap and water to infective area.
Inhaled
Remove patient to fresh air. Conduct CPR immediately. Consult a doctor.
First Aid Facilities
Ensure an eye bath and safety shower are available and ready for use.
2.5 Advice to Doctor
Treat symptomatically based on judgement of doctor and individual reactions of patients.
2.6 Toxicity Data
No information available.
3. PRECAUTIONS FOR USE
3.1 Exposure Standards
The NOHSC (Worksafe ) have a TWA = 10 mg/m3 for calcium stearate, which is equivalent to the recommended value for any nuisance dust in the work place (measured as inspirable dust).
3.2 Engineering Controls
Local exhaust to keep dust below exposure standard.
3.3 Personal Protection
Respiratory protection - wear anti-dusk mask. Eye protection - wear protective glasses, contact lenses are forbidden. Skin protection - wear protective rubber gloves and protective clothing. Maintain good housekeeping to control fume accumulations. Wash hands and face thoroughly with soap and water, before eating, drinking or smoking.
3.4 Flammability
Does not present specific fir hazard but will burn if ignited. Keep away from sources of ignition. Ground all equipment to prevent static sparking. May form explosive dust cloud. SAFE HANDLING INFORMATION
4.1 Storage / Transport
Keep containers tightly closed. Avoid inproper collid. Store at room temperature (15-25 deg C). Keep away from sun, fire and sources of ignition. Avoid contact with incompatible materials such as organic acids, alkalis and inorganic acids.
4.2 Packaging / Labelling UN No. N/A Class None Allocated Sub Risk None Allocated Hazchem Code N/A Pack Group 0 EPG No. N/A Shipping Name CALCIUM STEARATE Hazard

4.3 Spills and Disposal
Spills
Clean up personnel should wear protective clothing including breathing apparatus if dusty conditions prevail. Avoid raising dust.
Vacuum spillage whilst wearing particle mask. Put into well sealed bags to minimise dust and dispose.
Disposal
Dispose of in dump-master in accordance with all Local, State and Federal regulations. PBO smoke caused while infected package burning, clean equipment is required.
4.4 FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARD Fire / Explosion
Calcium stearate powder in air, plus an ignition source is a potential dust explosion hazard. Avoid generating dust to reduce explosion risk. Minimum explosive concentration = 25 g/m3. Hazardous decomposition products include carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and calcium oxide.
Extinguishing Media
Fire fighters should wear full protective clothing including self-contained breathing apparatus. Use chemical powder, carbon dioxide, water or foam type extinguishers. Water spray may be ineffective and is not recommended. 5 OTHER INFORMATION
Other Information
Calcium stearate is bio-degradable and will not harm soil.
