2. HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION
2.1 Health Effects - Acute Swallowed
Ingestion of significant amounts of cobalt has been reported to have the potential for causing blood, heart, thyroid and pancreas damage. Eye
May cause eye irritation to sensitive persons. Skin
Possibility of skin allergic reaction by sensitive persons. Prolonged exposure may produce irritation. Inhaled
Inhalation may cause irritation of the respiratory organs of sensitive persons resulting in obstruction of airways with shortness of breath. 2.2 Health Effects - Chronic
Prolonged inhalation of dust, fume or mist containing cobalt may cause serious respiratory illness. Inhalation may cause obstruction of the airways with shortness of breath for sensitive persons. "Interstitial fibrosis, a disease which can be fatal has been observed in workers exposed to high concentrations of dust containing cobalt in combination with tungsten, iron, etc., mainly in the cemented carbides and the diamond polishing industries" Ref. Mutagenicity, carcinogenicity and teratogenicity of Co metal and cobalt compounds (A.Leonard and R.Lauwerys, Mutation Research, 239 (1990) 17-27).
2.3 First Aid
Swallowed
In case of ingestion and if conscious, induce vomiting. Contact a physician.
Eye
Flush thoroughly with water, including under eyelids. If irritation occurs, contact a physician.
Skin
Wash thoroughly with soap and water. If irritation occurs, contact a physician.
Inhaled
In case of inhalation of cobalt containing dust, mist or fume, remove from exposure. If breathing is difficult, administer oxygen by trained/qualified individual. Obtain medical attention.
First Aid Facilities
Ensure an eye bath and safety shower are available and ready for use.
2.5 Advice to Doctor
Treat symptomatically based on judgement of doctor and individual reactions of patient. Allergic or hypersensitive persons should not be allowed on jobs involving the exposure to cobalt. Periodic medical examinations are recommended for individuals regularly exposed to dust, fume or mist. Failure to practise good industrial hygiene increases the risk of contracting a cobalt-related lung disease.
2.6 Toxicity Data
Oral LD50 = not available Dermal LD50 = not available Inhalation LC50 = not available Possibility of : - eye irritation - skin irritation and sensitisation - respiratory tract sensitisation
3. PRECAUTIONS FOR USE
3.1 Exposure Standards
The following exposure standard has been established by Worksafe : Cobalt, metal dust & fume (as Co) : TWA = 0.05 mg/m3 - Sensitiser notation. ACGIH (1997) TWA : cobalt, elemental & inorganic compounds (as Co) : 0.02 mg/m3
3.2 Engineering Controls
Proper ventilation should be provided in order to maintain dust concentration in the air below the occupational exposure limit. Periodic air quality testing is needed to ensure adherence to acceptable limits.
3.3 Personal Protection
Use an approved respirator if airborne dust concentration exceeds the the occupational exposure limit. A respirator loses its effectiveness when worn with a beard. Wear suitable gloves. Wear safety glasses or face shield in operations that scatter fine particles in the air. Wear protective work clothes. Work clothes should be worn for only one day if exposed to dust. Workers in flame- or sparkgenerating operations should, in addition, wear workclothes made of fire-retardant materials. Wash hands and face thoroughly after handling and before work breaks, eating, drinking, smoking and using toilet facilities.
3.4 Flammability
Material will not burn. SAFE HANDLING INFORMATION
4.1 Storage / Transport
Avoid breathing dust and avoid contact with skin and eyes. Avoid dampness in storage. Otherwise, no special precautions needed for handling and storing in unopened containers.
4.2 Packaging / Labelling UN No. N/A Class None Allocated Sub Risk None Allocated Hazchem Code N/A Pack Group 0 EPG No. N/A Shipping Name COBALT HYDROXIDE Hazard HARMFUL
Risk Phrases R22 Harmful if swallowed. R42/43 May cause sensitisation by inhalation and skin contact.
Safety Phrases S24 Avoid contact with skin. S37 Wear suitable gloves.
4.3 Spills and Disposal
Spills
Avoid creation of dust. An approved respirator for dust should be worn. Prevent cobalt hydroxide from entering into surface waters.
The spill should first be contained and the area should be cleaned by sweeping up or vacuum cleaning. Cobalt hydroxide is not soluble in water.
Disposal
Dispose of in accordance with all Local, State and Federal regulations at an approved waste disposal facility. Cobalt hydroxide can be recycled and consideration of disposal via this route should be given.
4.4 FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARD Fire / Explosion
Will not burn or explode. Stable under normal conditions. No conditions to avoid, materials to avoid, or hazardous decomposition products listed.
Extinguishing Media
Fire-fighters should wear full protective clothing including self-contained breathing apparatus with full facepiece operated in positive pressure mode. In case of fire use dry powder or water type extinguishers. Use equipment/media appropriate to surrounding fire conditions. 5 OTHER INFORMATION
