DBE IS USED IN A VARIETY OF SOLVENT APPLICATIONS BOTH AS A STAND ALONE SOLVENT AND IN FORMULATIONS. HOWEVER, IT CAN ALSO FUNCTION AS A BUILDING BLOCK OR AS A CHEMICAL INTERMEDIATE

 

COATINGS

 

DBE IS USED EXTENSIVELY IN COATING APPLICATIONS. COATING APPLICATIONS INCLUDE COIL COATING, CAN COATING, INDUSTRIAL COATINGS, DECORATIVE OR ARCHITECTURAL COATINGS, AND INKS. DBE HAS A COMBINATION OF HIGH SOLVENCY AND SLOW EVAPORATION ENABLING IT TO PERFORM WELL AS A "TAILS SOLVENT" IN COATING FORMULATIONS. AS A TAILS SOLVENT, IT IS THE LAST SOLVENT TO LEAVE THE SYSTEM, PROVIDING DESIRABLE FINAL COATINGS PROPERTIES AND LEAVING A HIGH-GLOSS FINISH.

 

CLEANING

 

DBE'S ABILITY TO DISSOLVE MANY INDUSTRIAL SOILS MAKES IT THE PRODUCT OF CHOICE IN MANY AREAS WHERE CLEANING IS NEEDED. EXAMPLES OF APPLICATION AREAS ARE IN RESIN CLEAN-UP, PAINT BOOTH CLEANING, DEGREASING, INDUSTRIAL CLEANING, GRAFFITI AND HAND-CLEANING IN AN INDUSTRIAL SETTING. THE LOW MISCIBILITY OF DBE WITH WATER MAKES FOR EASY SEPARATION FROM EFFLUENT, AND RECYCLING IF REQUIRED.

 

PAINT STRIPPING

 

DBE IS A VERY EFFECTIVE COATING AND PAINT STRIPPER PRINCIPALLY DUE TO ITS EXCELLENT SOLVENCY AND COMPATIBILITY WITH NUMEROUS OTHER SOLVENTS. DBE CAN BE USED AS AN EFFECTIVE ALTERNATIVE TO OTHER TRADITIONAL PAINTING STRIPPING SOLVENTS. DBE IS COMPATIBLE WITH MANY OTHER SOLVENTS MAKING IT IDEALLY SUITED FOR MANY DIFFERENT FORMULATIONS. FOUNDRY CORE BINDER

 

RESINS THAT HOLD TOGETHER THE SAND IN A METAL CASTING MOULD ARE CALLED FOUNDRY CORE BINDERS. DBE IS BEING USED MORE AND MORE AS IT PROVIDES SIGNIFICANT ADVANTAGES IN THESE FORMULATIONS, FOR EXAMPLE GIVING INCREASED WORKING TIME OF THE MIX, AND INCREASED TENSILE STRENGTH OF THE CURED SHAPE. DBE IS A VIABLE ALTERNATIVE TO MANY OF THE TRADITIONAL AROMATIC SOLVENTS, ESPECIALLY IN COLD-BOX SYSTEMS, WHICH ARE BECOMING MORE PREVALENT AS THE COMPLEXITY OF SHAPES INCREASES.


RECYCLING SOLVENT

 

DBE DISSOLVES MANY DIFFERENT RESINS AND CERTAIN PLASTICS SUCH AS POLYSTYRENE MAKING IT AN ATTRACTIVE SOLVENT FOR MANY PLASTICS RECYCLING APPLICATIONS. PARTIAL SOLUBILITY IN WATER CAN LEAD TO PRECIPITATION OPTIONS FOR POLYMER RECOVERY IN AN AQUEOUS PHASE, AND DBE ITSELF CAN BE RECOVERED BY VACUUM DISTILLATION.

 

OILFIELD CHEMICALS

ADHESIVES

 

DBE PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN ADHESIVE APPLICATIONS. DBE'S MISCIBILITY WITH MOST ORGANIC SOLVENTS AND SOLVENCY FOR A WIDE RANGE OF RESINS MAKES IT USEFUL AS A CLEANING SOLVENT FOR EQUIPMENT. IT ALSO FINDS USE AS A CARRIER SOLVENT IN SOLVENT-BORNE ADHESIVE SYSTEMS REQUIRING A SLOW EVAPORATING SOLVENT IN ADHESIVE FORMULATIONS. DBE CAN OFTEN BE USED AS AN EFFECTIVE ALTERNATIVE FOR SOLVENTS SUCH AS METHYLENE CHLORIDE, MEK, 1,1,1-TRICHLOROETHANE, XYLENE, TOLUENE, AND ACETONE IN ADHESIVES APPLICATIONS.

 

PLASTICIZERS  

 

PLASTICIZERS ARE USUALLY SHORT-CHAIN POLYMERS IN A RESIN WHICH INTERFERE WITH THE HARDENING PROCESS. THEY CAN BE SOFT SEGMENTS IN THE POLYMER BACKBONE (PERMANENT PLASTICIZERS), BUT ARE USUALLY SEPARATE MOLECULES BETWEEN THE POLYMER CHAINS, SO-CALLED FUGITIVE PLASTICIZERS. THEY ARE TYPICALLY ESTERS OF BRANCHED ISOMERS OF C8, 9 & 10 MONO ALCOHOLS.

 

DBE AND ITS FRACTIONS SERVE AS A SOURCE OF ACIDS IN THE FORMATION OF PERMANENT DIESTER AND POLYESTER PLASTICIZERS, OR DIRECTLY AS FUGITIVE PLASTICIZERS IN FLEXIBLE, THERMOSET AND OTHER RESINS.
